From Burned Out to Fired Up: Finding Harmony

Good morning, good morning, good morning! Welcome to Sunday Morning Coffee. I have mine, so if you don’t have yours yet, go ahead, go brew it or pour it. I’ll wait for you.

As I sit on my back porch in slightly chilled but comfortable autumn morning splendor, drinking coffee and conversing with you, I’m so thankful. For all of it…my beautiful setting, the wonder of nature, family, good health, meaningful work, and good friends. In today's fast-paced world, where technology connects us around the clock and the demands of work and life seem to constantly tug at our attention, taking time to just be, reflecting on nothing in particular, and taking a break from working (physically, mentally, and emotionally) is pretty difficult some times. But, achieving a healthy life/work balance has become more critical than ever. This delicate equilibrium between our professional and personal lives not only impacts our well-being but also influences our overall happiness and productivity. What’s the significance of maintaining a healthy life/work balance and how can we get there?

Let’s start with the importance of balance:

Enhanced Well-being: Striking a balance between work and life is essential for maintaining good physical and mental health. Constantly pushing ourselves without respite can lead to stress, burnout, and a host of health issues. I don’t know about you, but this one’s hard for me. My work isn’t just a paycheck, it’s a passion, and while that sounds super noble and all, it can also become unhealthy. When work is all you can talk about or think about, it’s no longer a passion, it leans more towards an obsession, and those are never conducive to balance. We can fool ourselves, too, right? We can say…oh, while I was at such-and-such work conference in such-and-such fabulous city, I ate some great barbeque. Never mind that you were at a WORK conference with WORK colleagues talking about WORK over the barbeque. lol! I’m not saying that’s bad, but it’s not the same as life/work balance. That’s just work in a different location with better food. Look, here’s the gist of this whole “enhanced well-being” thing: a balanced life can reduce stress, improve mood, and boost overall happiness. I’m guessing you could use that.

Increased Productivity: Paradoxically, working longer hours doesn’t always lead to increased productivity. Fatigue and stress can hinder your ability to focus and make effective decisions. By allocating time to both work and leisure, you can recharge your energy and approach tasks with a fresh perspective, ultimately boosting your efficiency. My brain is a whirlwind of ideas, always, but I’ve realized over the years, that when I take a break (a real one, not a ‘vacation’ where people still call me or I’m still doing a little bit of work every day), or when I read a book for fun, or when I’m engaged in making art, etc, my creativity takes a wild boost. And I’ve also noticed that when I let other people take the reins for a while, not only does productivity increase, but I have more down time for myself and the other person gets the experience needed to grow. There’s a price to pay for always being ‘on,’ and one of the costs is productivity. Trust me on this.

Stronger Relationships: Neglecting personal relationships in pursuit of professional success can lead to strained relationships and loneliness. This is often times the first thing to go when we get consumed with work. A healthy life/work balance allows you to spend quality time with loved ones, nurturing those connections and creating a support network that can help you through life's challenges. It’s important to have friends outside of your work environment. I mean, if nothing else, you need to have some intelligent cocktail party conversation, and if all you can do is talk about your work, you’ll lose your audience. You need to see and hear and experience things that aren’t work-related to be relatable. That’s it, really. And let’s get real…when you’re in a room with a gathering of friends and family, and you’re on your lap top making a power point or researching some topic or making a spreadsheet, or whatever work-related stuff you feel compelled to do…you aren’t with your friends and family. You’re just at work. They may be too polite to point it out, but I’ll tell you…put the work down and engage with your friends and family. No matter how important your work is to you, someone will take up the mantle if you stop doing it, but relationships with your loved ones have an expiration date that can’t be retrieved once it’s passed. All of the work conferences and work events and spreadsheets and power points and accolades are nothing, really, compared to the relationships we should be nurturing. We need to nurture those relationships as well as the ones we nurture at work.

How do we achieve this elusive life/work balance?

Set Clear Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries between your work and personal life. Define working hours and stick to them. Avoid checking work emails or taking business calls during your personal time whenever possible.

Prioritize Self-Care: Self-care is not a luxury; it's a necessity. Make time for activities that rejuvenate you, whether it's exercise, meditation, reading, or spending time in nature. Prioritizing self-care will help you stay physically and mentally fit.

Manage Your Time Wisely: Use time management techniques like the Pomodoro technique to structure your workday effectively. Allocate specific time blocks for tasks and take regular breaks to recharge.

Delegate and Say No: Don't be afraid to delegate tasks when possible, and learn to say no when your plate is already full. Overcommitting can lead to overwhelm and burnout.

Technology Detox: Unplug from digital devices during your downtime. Constant notifications and screens can blur the lines between work and personal life. Designate tech-free hours to fully engage with your loved ones and hobbies.

Plan and Prioritize: Plan your week ahead, and prioritize tasks based on their importance and urgency. This will help you stay organized and avoid last-minute rushes that can encroach on your personal time.

Seek Support: If you're struggling to maintain balance, seek support from your employer, family, or friends. Communicate your needs and challenges to those around you, and explore potential solutions together.

Reflect and Adjust: Periodically assess your life/work balance. Are you feeling stressed or overwhelmed? Are your relationships suffering? Adjust your priorities and schedule as needed to maintain equilibrium.

A healthy life/work balance isn’t just a buzzword but a critical aspect of our well-being and success. By taking deliberate steps to prioritize both your professional and personal life, you can enjoy greater happiness, improved health, and increased productivity. Keep in mind that balance isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept; it's about finding what works best for you and continuously adapting as your circumstances change. So, start your journey toward a more balanced life today, and reap the rewards of a happier, healthier, and more fulfilling existence. I have to go now, because my three year old g-baby just told me that I need to “play dollhouse” with her. Priorities. That’s all I’m saying.
